The magazine is in its inaugural year, and we’re excited to build a community of passionate editors and readers to help shape the voice of our publication. While these positions are volunteer-based, we offer also unique benefits as part of our growing team.

Available Editorial Positions:

  • Short Stories Editor
  • Essay Editor
  • Visual Media Editor
  • Interviews Editor
  • Letters Editor
  • Plays Editor
  • Hybrid Editor
  • Social Media Editor

Responsibilities:

  • Review and select submissions for publication in your assigned section.
  • Provide feedback to applicants in a timely fashion 
  • Work with selected contributors on edits
  • Ensure your section aligns with the magazine’s overall vision
  • Attend bi-weekly meetings with other Magazine editors
  • Write articles and newsletter content as needed 
  • Contribute to Magazine promotion efforts as needed; social, web, and newsletter

Are you an avid reader or passionate about the arts? Do you want to sharpen your editorial skills and discover new talent? 

Join Yams and Sweet Potatoes Magazine as a volunteer submission reader and help us spotlight the voices of young Black creatives!

Responsibilities:

  • Read and evaluate poetry, short stories, essays, and other creative works submitted to the magazine.
  • Offer constructive feedback to writers, helping them refine their craft.
  • Work closely with the editorial team to discuss and select pieces for publication.
  • Participate in regular meetings and discussions to stay updated on editorial goals and progress.

What You’ll Gain:

  • Your name published as a part of the Editorial Team in the Magazine’s Special Acknowledgement Section

By filling out this form, you will be added to our list of magazine submission readers for the current reading period and future cycles. If your availability changes, please let us know.

*Please note: Work is usually limited to reading periods, though there may be some opportunities to collaborate with editors throughout the year. If you’d like to take a more active role in the magazine, consider applying for one of our Editorial positions instead.
